Background
LILY'S was founded in 2012 by Cynthia Tice in Philadelphia. Tice had previously run a natural foods store and had used stevia for home cooking and baking for years. At launch the brand placed four chocolate bars nationally at Whole Foods Market.
On 18 May 2021 The Hershey Company announced the acquisition; the purchase closed on 25 June 2021 for USD 425 million. Hershey framed the move as part of a strategic push into reduced-sugar confectionery.
Range and sweeteners
The range covers bars in dark, milk and white variants, baking chips, peanut butter cups, gummies and chocolate-covered almonds. Sweetening uses steviol glycosides in combination with erythritol.
In Germany LILY'S is not regularly stocked by grocery retail; it is mostly available through import retailers, specialist online shops and Amazon.
What sets the brand apart
LILY'S was among the early suppliers of stevia-sweetened chocolate in the mass market and helped shape the category in the US. The baking range is particularly well developed: no-added-sugar baking chips are considerably harder to find in Europe than bar chocolate.
Belonging to Hershey means large production capacity and stable availability in its home market – for European buyers, however, sourcing remains an import matter with the corresponding prices.
